Five causes of uneven skin tone — three overlapping dimensions

⚠️ Warning:Treating all uneven skin tone as a “pigment problem” and blasting it with high-energy IPL is the most common mistake among Asian patients. If your dominant dimension is vascular or barrier-related, IPL not only fails to work — it can worsen redness or trigger PIH. Diagnose by dimension, then match the device to the dimension. Risks & Contraindications — what we must spell out
What are the main risks?
1. PIH Paradoxical darkening(Moderate risk in Asian skin) — can be significantly reduced with low energy + test spot + barrier pre-treatment; 2. Temporary redness / dry flaking (common, resolves in 1–3 days); 3. Pinprick sensation during treatment (tolerable, cold compress can be added); 4. Very rare blistering / crusting (rare with proper protocols); 5. Recurrence due to poor maintenance (unavoidable, can only be managed).
Who should absolutely not undergo this treatment?
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, oral isotretinoin within the past 6 months, unhealed sunburn within the past 4 weeks, active facial inflammation, severe keloid tendency without assessment, photosensitive disorders, uncontrolled melasma, or unrealistic expectations (believing 1–2 sessions can cure it) — in these cases our physician will recommend postponing or addressing other issues first.
How is PIH risk minimized during treatment?
Five core principles: (1) Always perform a test spot; (2) Start at the low end of the energy range and titrate up gradually; (3) Maintain at least 4 weeks between sessions; (4) Strict mineral SPF 50+ (with iron oxide) for 4 weeks before and after treatment; (5) Apply cold compress and barrier-repair skincare immediately after treatment; return for follow-up if erythema persists beyond 7 days.
What does the informed consent form include?
Every client signs an Informed Consent form before their first treatment, covering: treatment mechanism, possible adverse reactions and probabilities, alternative options, stopping criteria, follow-up schedule, and Media Release (voluntary).
