WHAT IS CELLULITE

What is cellulite? Why is it different from ordinary body fat?

Cellulite (also known as Gynoid Lipodystrophy) is caused by subcutaneous fat pushing through Fibrous Septae pushing upward to form Uneven, dimpled “orange peel” skin texture a structural concern. It is not simply “excess fat,” nor is it loose skin — it is Fat + fascia + skin the result of an imbalance across all three layers, which may persist even after weight loss.

Why Doesn’t Weight Loss Get Rid of Cellulite?

The core issue in cellulite is not the amount of fat, but rather Fibrous septal constriction of fat lobules. After fat is reduced, the tethering structures remain intact — the uneven texture can actually become more visible as a result.

Why Are Women Disproportionately Affected?

Female subcutaneous fibrous septae Vertically oriented(In males, the septae form a criss-cross pattern), whereas under the influence of estrogen, fat cells are more prone to expansion and outward protrusion. Approximately 80–90% of adult women have some degree of cellulite.

Why Can’t a Single Device Treat Cellulite?

Cellulite involves Three layers: Fat volume (requires metabolic reduction) + fibrous septae (require release) + skin tightening (requires collagen stimulation). A single device can only address one layer — a combination protocol is what delivers results.

Why Is the Nürnberger-Müller Classification Necessary?

Grade 0–3 Different grades call for different protocols. Grade 1 can be addressed with Exilis alone; Grade 3 requires a combination of BodyFX + BTL Vanquish us + Thermage® FLX — Proceeding without grading wastes treatment resources.

Clinical notes:Many clients are sold the idea that “one device can fix cellulite” — this is the most common reason cellulite treatment fails. Our physician’s protocol The first step is always grading and zone-specific assessment, Protocol is built around the weighted contribution of fat / fibrous septae / skin laxity — not simply turning on a device.

CAUSES

The 5 Root Causes of Cellulite — It’s Not Just About Weight

Clinically, fat accumulation caused by obesity alone is classified as subcutaneous fat deposit. Cellulite must involve Structural imbalance for the characteristic dimpled texture to develop.

1. Fibrous septal structure (vertically oriented in women)

In women, more than 90% of subcutaneous fibrous septae run vertically, causing fat cells to protrude upward under vertical tension; men’s criss-cross septal structure makes cellulite far less common. This structural difference is the core reason for the gender disparity.

2. Estrogen / hormonal fluctuations

Puberty, pregnancy, oral contraceptives, and HRT can all worsen cellulite. Estrogen promotes fat cell enlargement, inhibits fat breakdown, and disrupts microcirculation.

3. Impaired microcirculation and lymphatic drainage

Prolonged sitting, lack of physical activity, and long-term use of tight-fitting clothing impair lymphatic drainage in the lower limbs. Fluid accumulation and metabolic waste retention worsen the swelling of fat lobules.

4. Loss of skin collagen and elastin

30 After a certain age, dermal collagen declines at approximately 1% per year. As the skin loses the ability to stay taut, fat protrusions become more visible — which is precisely why Grade 3 treatment must include a skin-tightening device.

5. Genetics + body fat distribution

A positive family history significantly increases the likelihood of developing cellulite. In Asian women, fat tends to accumulate in the outer thighs, subgluteal area, and abdomen — the very zones most prone to cellulite.

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS

4 Body concerns commonly mistaken for cellulite — key differentiating features

Different concerns require different devices. Misclassification leads to wasted treatment and investment.

Cellulite

Gynoid Lipodystrophy

Appearance Uneven “orange peel” skin texture
Distribution Posterior-lateral thighs, buttocks, abdomen
Triggering factors Fibrous septae + hormonal factors + microcirculation
Can slimming improve it Partial improvement; complete elimination is not achievable
First-line treatment BodyFX + Emsculpt NEO + Exilis Combination

Localized Fat Accumulation (Localized Fat)

Localized Adiposity

Appearance Smooth surface protrusion, no dimpling or textural irregularity
Distribution Abdomen, flanks, inner thighs
Triggering factors Excess caloric intake + genetic predisposition
Can slimming improve it Improvement achievable in most cases
First-line treatment Emsculpt NEO / Vanquish us

Skin laxity

Skin Laxity

Appearance Sagging, wrinkling, and poor skin rebound
Distribution Upper arms, abdomen, and inner thighs
Triggering factors Collagen loss + significant weight loss + aging
Can slimming improve it May worsen
First-line treatment Thermage® FLX Body / Exilis Ultra

Stretch marks / striae

Striae Distensae

Appearance Linear streaks (red / white)
Distribution Abdomen, thighs, buttocks, chest
Triggering factors Rapid body composition changes that disrupt collagen integrity
Can slimming improve it Ineffective
First-line treatment PicoSure Pro / Morpheus8

⚠️ Caution:Clinically, approximately 35% of clients who present with “cellulite” are assessed and found to have simple fat accumulation or skin laxity instead — using the wrong device means wasted investment. Inaccurate diagnosis leads to treatment failure — this is the most common frustration with body contouring treatments.

ASIAN BODY FOCUS

Why Do Asian Women Need an Asia-Specific Body Protocol for Cellulite?

Common blind spots in mainstream North American clinics

Standard North American cellulite protocol parameters are derived from clinical data on Caucasian women with an average BMI of 25–28. Applying these directly to Asian women with a BMI of 19–23 introduces fundamental problems:

  • ✗ Energy overload— Thin subcutaneous fat layer — standard energy levels may cause discomfort
  • ✗ Incorrect identification of the treatment zone— Cellulite in Asian women most commonly affects the posterior-lateral thighs and infragluteal fold, whereas standard North American protocols tend to focus on the anterior thighs
  • ✗ Laxity goes unaddressed— Asian women generally have a smaller frame, lower muscle mass, and a higher proportion of skin laxity — making early intervention for skin tightening especially important

Our physician’s Asian body type protocol adjustments

Parameters North American standard Asian-adjusted
Radiofrequency energy High-energy single session Low-to-moderate energy, multiple sessions
Primary treatment area Anterior-lateral thighs Posterior-lateral thighs + infragluteal fold
Proportion of tightening focus 20% 40-50%
Emsculpt Intensity Starting from 80% Starting from 60% intensity adaptation
Combined with lymphatic drainage Optional Must-Do

Key differentiators:Our physician has dedicated 8 years to treating Asian patients at our Nanjing clinic, with over 90% of clients being Asian women.

TREATMENT OPTIONS

6 Cellulite Treatment Protocols — Selected by Grade + Primary Contributing Factor

There is no single “miracle device” for cellulite. We combine the technologies below based on Nürnberger-Müller grading and a weighted assessment of three contributing factors: fat, fibrous septae, and skin laxity.

Recommended

BTL Exilis Ultra

Monopolar radiofrequency + synchronized ultrasound,Layered heating targeting deep and superficial tissue, Particularly effective for mild-to-moderate cellulite and skin laxity. Minimal downtime, comfortable treatment experience — well suited for the maintenance phase.

Adjunct / Supportive

Lymphatic drainage + at-home maintenance

Professional manual lymphatic drainage combined with at-home dry brushing and Healite II LED red light therapy — improving microcirculation and facilitating metabolic waste clearance.Cannot be used as a standalone primary treatment, However, it is highly effective as an between-session maintenance option.

TREATMENT FLOW

Our physician’s 6-Step Standard Cellulite Protocol

01

Consultation + Grading + Zone-by-Zone Assessment

30 Free consultation, Nürnberger-Müller grading (standing + lateral recumbent + pinch test), with zone-by-zone documentation of the three-factor weighting: fat / fibrous septae / skin laxity. No grading, no treatment.

02

2 weeks of lifestyle preparation (microcirculation support + hydration)

Adjust hydration, reduce high-sodium and high-sugar intake, and incorporate walking, dry brushing, and lymphatic drainage. This step significantly enhances treatment outcomes and prevents lifestyle habits from undermining your results.

03

Primary treatment phase — main devices (4–8 sessions, based on grade)

Grade 1: Exilis 4–6 sessions; Grade 2: Emsculpt NEO × 4 sessions + BodyFX × 6 sessions; Grade 3: BodyFX × 8 sessions + Vanquish us × 4 sessions.Once weekly or once every two weeks.

04

Tightening phase (introduced in the mid-to-later stage of the treatment course)

Grade 2–3 After 4 primary treatment sessions, Thermage® FLX Body or Exilis Ultra is introduced to address the skin laxity component.Sequence is critical: Volume reduction and septal release first, then tightening.

05

Assessment period (8 weeks after completion of the primary treatment phase)

Circumference measurements + standardized photography comparison + client self-assessment. This determines whether to transition into the maintenance phase or add further treatments. Collagen remodeling takes 60–90 days to show results — there is no need to rush the evaluation.

06

Maintenance Phase (once every 8–12 weeks, long-term)

Quarterly Emsculpt NEO or Exilis maintenance + annual Thermage® FLX Body. Cellulite is Structural concern, Maintenance treatments combined with lifestyle habits are essential for long-term results.

TIMELINE

Treatment Timeline — How Long Until You See Results?

Grading Primary treatment course Initial results Significant improvement Maintenance interval
Grade 1(Mild) 4–6 session(s) After the 2nd session After session 4 Every 8–12 weeks
Grade 2(Moderate) 6–8 session(s) After session 3 After session 6 Every 8–10 weeks
Grade 3(Severe) 8–12 session(s) After session 4 After session 8 Every 6–8 weeks
Grade 3 + Significant laxity 10–15 sessions + Thermage® FLX After the 5th session After the 10th session Every 6 weeks + annual tightening

Clinical note:The collagen remodeling response curve shows 60–180 day(s), Do not draw conclusions just two weeks after completing treatment. Clients who commit to a structured one-year maintenance program achieve a texture stability rate of over 80%. The most common reason for failure we see in Nanjing is stopping after three sessions because results aren’t immediate — that is a misconception issue, not a device issue.

PRICING PHILOSOPHY

About the Cost of Cellulite Treatment

Pricing for cellulite treatments varies widely between clinics — but the real cost driver is not the device itself. It comes down to who performs the assessment, who determines the grade and combination protocol, and how deeply clinical expertise needs to be involved. Cellulite is a three-layer structural problem involving fat, fibrous septae, and skin laxity. Grading is complex, device combinations vary, and protocols often need to be adjusted at each follow-up based on how the tissue responds. For cases requiring our physician’s direct involvement in treatment planning, the pricing reflects that level of medical resource. For clients with a clear grade and straightforward goals (e.g., Grade 1 mild maintenance), trained aestheOur therapy team can safely perform treatments under a physician-approved protocol, making care more accessible. The price difference between energy-based treatments ultimately reflects the clinical experience gap between physician-directed and technician-performed procedures (physician vs. technician). For complex, multi-layer combination plans, we insist that the physician designs the protocol. The right approach for you is determined by your grade and condition — not by price. Details will be discussed at your consultation based on the Nürnberger-Müller classification and the three-factor weighting system.

  • Payment is made at the clinic, after the consultation and before treatment begins
  • Nothing is paid in advance, and no deposit is required to hold an appointment
  • Cosmetic treatment is a self-pay item and is not covered by public medical insurance in China
  • All new clients receive a complimentary 30-minute Free Consultation & Assessment
RISKS & INFORMED CONSENT

Risks & Contraindications — We Believe in Full Transparency

What Are the Main Risks?

1. Transient erythema / warmth(common, resolving within 30 minutes to 2 hours); 2. BodyFX Vacuum-induced bruising(uncommon, resolving within 1–2 weeks); 3. Emsculpt NEO Post-treatment muscle soreness(post-workout soreness, lasting 24–48 hours); 4. Rare risk of radiofrequency burns (extremely rare when protocols are properly followed); 5. Cellulite recurrence (cannot be prevented, only managed) — this is a structural issue.

Who Is Absolutely Not a Candidate?

Pregnancy or breastfeeding (contraindicated for certain devices including Emsculpt NEO®), metal implants / pacemaker / defibrillator in the treatment area, severe coagulation disorder, active skin infection / eczema / open wound in the treatment area, unassessed severe varicose veins, recent surgery with incomplete recovery, or severe hepatic or renal impairment — in any of these situations, our physician will recommend deferring treatment or addressing the underlying condition first.

How is discomfort and bruising minimized during treatment?

5 Key Tips: (1) Avoid alcohol, aspirin, and fish oil for 48 hours before your session to minimize bruising; (2) Stay well hydrated and do not come on an empty stomach; (3) Begin at the lower end of the energy range and increase gradually; (4) Walk for 10 minutes immediately after treatment to support lymphatic drainage; (5) Avoid intense exercise and saunas for 48 hours post-treatment — if persistent redness or hardness lasts more than 7 days, book a follow-up promptly.

What does the informed consent form include?

Every client is required to sign an informed consent form prior to their first treatment. It covers: the treatment mechanism, possible adverse reactions and their likelihood, alternative options, criteria for discontinuing treatment, follow-up scheduling, and an optional media release. All content is explained in person by our physician — not delegated to administrative staff.

Everything above about Cellulite rests on published evidence rather than on our own word. The sources below are the ones behind those statements: peer-reviewed papers indexed in PubMed, and guidance written for patients by dermatology academies and national health services. They are not an assessment of this clinic, and no published study can tell you whether it suits your skin type, anatomy, or medical history. That judgement comes from the physician who examines you in person, and it may well be “not this one”.
