We disclose every possible reaction, serious risk, and contraindicated population (including Fitzpatrick V-VI Burn-risk contraindication) openly disclosed so you have complete information before your consultation. Our physician reviews the specific risks of each Ai BBL HEROic filter with you item-by-item before every treatment.
Common reactions (appear shortly after treatment)
- Erythema and a warm sensation (24 subsides within hours; cold compress may be used)
- Mild swelling (24-48 hours to resolve, slightly longer around the eyes)
- Pigmented lesions temporarily darken (D3-D14 Coffee-colored crystalline sloughing — a normal reaction)
- Skin sensitivity (Skin is more sun-sensitive for 4 weeks post-treatment; strict SPF 50+ is required)
- Occasional itching (1–3 days post-treatment, gentle moisturization is sufficient)
Serious risks (rare but must be disclosed)
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)— Moderate risk, most often in Fitzpatrick III-IV patients without strict sun avoidance; Our physician significantly reduces this risk through AI Intelligent Mode + low-energy protocols + shorter filters + sun protection guidance.
- Burns / blisters— Primarily seen in Fitzpatrick V-VI patients or those recently tanned, this is the core reason for BBL’s cautionary boundary
- Hypopigmentation— Rare, mostly from excessive energy or repeated treatment of the same area
- Scarring— Extremely rare, mostly from improper energy settings or picking at crystallized pigment
- Infection— Rare — adhere to post-care and sun protection
- Eye injury— Extremely rare (dedicated protective eye shields must be strictly worn)
- Melasma worsening— BBL in Dermal / mixed-type melasma may trigger a rebound, so BBL is not the first-line treatment for melasma
Absolute contraindications (do not treat)
- Fitzpatrick V-VI Very dark skin (burn contraindication)
- Pregnancy / breastfeeding
- Unresolved tan / intense sun exposure within the past 4 weeks
- Active infection, open wounds or active herpes simplex
- Oral Accutane / isotretinoin within the past 6 months
- Keloid / hypertrophic scarring tendency
- Photosensitizing medications not discontinued
- Autoimmune diseases involving the skin (vitiligo, active lupus erythematosus)
- Dermal melasma (BBL is not first-line · PicoSure Pro recommended)
